Elimika Wikiendi is an online space for Swahili Speaking population across Tanzania and East Africa to dialogue on matters that they feel passionate about or has to be improved. ElimikaWikiendi, which is literary translated as ‘’Get Educated on the Weekend” started in January 2016 as an open online space for Kiswahili speakers to discuss issues that are proximate to their lives – such as issues affecting people’s lives including shrinking democratic space and adherence to rule of law. Elimika Wikiendi has worked with human rights advocacy leaders with years’ experience in promotion and protection of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
Not only that but also Elimika Wikiendi as an online space is there for conducting dialogues concerning health issues, research, development, entrepreneurship, technology and design. Just to mention a few.
Through the use of the hashtag #ElimikaWikiendi, it starts dialogues each Saturday morning between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM with three online sessions – each hosted by online guest experts presenting three different subjects. As of 2018, after two years of promising growth and acceptance, Elimika Wikiendi is arguably the leading online the educational platform in Tanzania through a trending hashtag on Twitter every weekend which has drawn the the attention of hundreds of thousands of Twitter users both high profile individuals, politicians and TV personalities to students and young entrepreneurs. According to data obtained from Twitter, #ElimikaWikiendi hashtag gets about 5 a million impressions while extending its reach to over 1.5 million people on Twitter every weekend and attracts hundreds of active users who tweet about different topics of the day
